I was so disappointed to find out it was a dude singing. It was a great ode to unrequited lesbian love until I learned that.

Even if it was a girl singing, I would have imagined she was assuming the voice of a guy. "Teenage dirtbag" just doesn't sound female, unless it's ironic as it's used later in the song.

I have loved this song for a long time. :-) And Dynamite Hack's cover of Boys in the Hood...just beautiful.
